Smooth Away Wrinkles with Neurotoxin Injections

Tired of wrinkles and fine lines? Sounds like you could use a neurotoxin treatment. There are several neurotoxin injections on the market today that can target certain muscle groups to leave your skin looking relaxed, smoother, and more youthful than ever before.

What Exactly are Neurotoxin Injections?

You’ve probably heard of Botox, right? It’s one of the most popular cosmetic treatments that’s performed around the nation, it’s also a neurotoxin injection. And there are other name brands on the market that you’ve probably heard of, like Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau. Those are all neurotoxin injections too.

These popular injections are designed to help smooth out muscles to prevent wrinkles from showing up. These wrinkles appear from repeated facial movements like when we smile, squint, frown, or any other expression that we tend to make throughout the day. These treatments are injected into a particular area to help soften your expression to help smooth dynamic wrinkles and fine lines.

How Do Neurotoxin Injections Work?

Raise your eyebrows real quick. You may see horizontal lines that run across your forehead when you make this movement. If so, then that’s an example of a dynamic wrinkle. It’s those types of wrinkles that neurotoxin injections target.

If you wanted to smooth those lines on your forehead, then the neurotoxin would be injected into the muscles that cause these movements. Once the solution is injected, it will interfere with the signal between the nerve and the muscle to stop the movements that cause these dynamic wrinkles to form. Simply put – if you have neurotoxin injected into your forehead area, then you won’t be able to raise your eyebrows like you just did, which means the lines won’t show up.

All it takes is just a small amount of neurotoxin to show big results. And the best part? These injections will keep your skin smooth for about three to four months.

What Areas Can I Use Neurotoxin Treatment?

There are several different problem areas that can be treated with neurotoxin therapy. We will meet with you during a consultation to go over your problem areas and see which neurotoxin injection will work best for the results you want.

Here are the most common areas that are treated with neurotoxin injections:

  • Glabellar lines
These are also known as frown lines. These lines look like the number eleven in between your eyebrows.
  • Crow’s feet
These are the wrinkles that you notice in the corners of your eyes from squinting a lot.
  • Forehead creases
These are the horizontal lines across your forehead.
  • Bunny lines
These are the wrinkles that develop on the nose from squishing up your nose too often.

While these areas are addressed the most, this isn’t the only thing neurotoxin injections can be used for. An experienced injector can also use neurotoxin to fix some other issues, including:

  • Uneven smile
  • Downturned corners of the mouth
  • Pebbling of the chin
  • Contouring the face and jawline
  • Smooth out the neck

What Should I Expect the Day of my Neurotoxin Treatment?

Your neurotoxin injection treatment will be done inside the comfort of our office at Winston Salem Dermatology. The injection sites will be predetermined to make the visit quick and comfortable. You may also be given a topical anesthetic to numb the area prior to injection to make things even more pleasant.

The area that you are having treated will depend on the number of syringes that are used during your treatment:

  • Under eyes – 1 – 2 syringes
  • Lips – ½ – 2 syringes
  • Marionette lines – 1 – 3 syringes
  • Smile lines – 1 – 3 syringes

The neurotoxin will quickly be injected into the precise locations that will target the required muscle groups. There is minimal discomfort during the process. Most patients describe feeling a pinching sensation during the injection but say there isn’t much pain at all.

The treatment is so quick and easy, most people go back to their normal activities after the injections are done. However, we do ask that you take the day off from exercise or other strenuous activity.

As far as side effects go, they are extremely mild. You may experience some redness, bruising, and minor inflammation around the injection site.

What Results Should I Expect with Neurotoxin Treatments?

You’ll need to practice patience after your neurotoxin treatment, because you won’t see results immediately after the injections. It will usually take about two weeks to see the full effects from your neurotoxin treatment.

Most people get retreated three to four times a year so they can maintain the ultimate results. Believe it or not, people who start getting this treatment done in their early twenties and thirties have actually been known to train their face to remain relaxed, so they don’t require as many treatments each year. Your dermatologist can adjust your dosage and techniques as needed to make sure you get optimal results.

What Are Other Uses for Neurotoxin Treatments?

While neurotoxin treatments work wonders on fine lines and wrinkles, that’s not all they are good for. Doctors have found success using these injections for other treatments:

  • Hyperhidrosis
This is when excessive sweating occurs. Neurotoxin injections can be used on a regular basis to help alleviate the embarrassment that comes with excessive sweating. This treatment can be used under the arms, on the hands, feet, and even the face.
  • Migraines
If you suffer from chronic migraines, then neurotoxin therapy could bring you some much-needed relief. Many patients have found success in getting these injections regularly to help with these painful headaches.
  • Muscle spasms
Neurotoxin injections have helped with painful muscle spasms. Once injected into the area, the solution will relax the muscles and reduce excessive contractions.
  • Incontinence
These injections have also been shown to help with involuntary spasms that lead to bladder control issues. The drug is injected into the detrusor muscle, which is the muscle that surrounds the bladder, which limits its ability to contract. This will help lower the constant urgency.

Be sure to discuss one of these issues with your dermatologist to see if you’re a good candidate for neurotoxin therapy in these areas.
